Hernia Repair
There are multiple types of hernias but the most common types are inguinal, umbilical or ventral hernias. These typically present as a hole in the muscular wall of the abdomen through which abdominal contents protrude.

Diagnosis
A patient may gradually notice a bulge in the affected area or there may be a sudden abdominal wall give out that will be accompanied by pain.
A physical exam can determine if the hernia is reducible or incarcerated.
A CT scan may be necessary to evaluate size and complexity of a hernia.
Who may get a hernia?
Most hernias result from a strain on the abdominal muscles dues to lifting, twisting or pulling heavy objects. Weight gain causing abdominal wall tension. Chronic constipation or coughs. As we age our muscles weaken and can allow an opening in the abdominal wall; however, these openings can be present at birth.
Surgery
Type of hernia repair is decided based on the complexity of the hernia and the patients current health and needs.

Most patients can return to work within 1-2 weeks but will have lifting restrictions for 4-6 weeks.
