Breast Cancer

All breast cancer patients are unique, not all people will present with the same symptoms, and some patients may have no symptoms at all.  This is why breast cancer screening is important.

Symptoms

Symptoms can include but are not limited to the following:

Lump in breast, under arm (axilla) or collarbone.  Change in breast size or shape.  Nipple discharge or retraction.  Tenderness in breast or nipple.  Swelling, irritation, redness, recurring itching or burning sensation, discoloration or change in texture.

Detection & Diagnosis

Regular mammograms along with clinical and self exams are recommended.  If a breast abnormality is found by mammogram then a breast ultrasound may be recommended.  A biopsy is performed when a change or abnormality may be cancer.

Surgery

Breast surgery is the most common treatment for breast cancer.  This can include a lumpectomy (breast conserving surgery) or a mastectomy.  A lymph node biopsy may be performed to know whether or not cancer has spread.  You and your surgeon will determine the best surgical option based on your specific type of cancer, the stage, genetic factors and family history.
