Appendectomy

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes sore, swollen or diseased.  The appendix is attached to the cecum, part of the large intestine.  Appendicitis is a medical emergency; if left untreated the appendix can rupture and can cause a systemic infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary but pain is most common.  Pain may begin near umbilicus and slowly migrate to the right lower quadrant.  Nausea and vomiting can occur.  Decreased appetite and fever as symptoms progress.

Diagnosis

A physical exam typically shows abdominal tenderness, lab work may show elevated white blood count.  A CT scan can show an inflamed or ruptured appendix.

Surgery

The majority of appendicitis surgeries can be performed laparoscopically even if the appendix has perforated.  There are severe cases where the appendix has ruptured and abdominal contamination may require an open procedure.
